Edward Randall Wiseman born on December 28, 1911 was an impressive ice hockey forward – right wing specifically.
Wiseman joined a long list of New Brunswickers whose hockey-playing talents earned them a berth in the exclusive National Hockey League of the 1930’s and 40’s. A native of Newcastle, he moved to Regina Saskatchewan -to “Western Canada”, the spawning grounds of so many major league stars, and was a member of the Memorial Cup-Champion Regina Pats in 1930. He graduated to the ranks of the N.H.L. in 1932-33 where for ten years he starred with Chicago, New York, and Boston. His career highlights include a Stanley Cup victory with the Bruins in 1940-41, and the distinction of being the leading goal scorer in the playoffs of that same year.
Wiseman played for the Regina Crescents from 1924 to 1928, Regina Argos from 1928 to 1929, Regina Pats from 1929 to 1930 winning the Memorial Cup in 1930, Chicago Shamrocks from 1930 to 1932 winning the championship in ‘32, Detroit Red Wings from 1932 to 1934, Detroit Olympics from 1933 to 1936, New York Americans from 1935 to 1940, Boston Bruins from 1939 to 1942 where they won a Stanley Cup in 1941, Saskatoon RCAF from 1942 to 1944, Montreal Royals from 1944 to 1945, and the Moose Jaw Canucks from 1945 to 1946.
Wiseman played in 454 NHL games, scoring 115 goals and 165 assists for 280 points. In the playoffs, he added 10 goals and 20 points in 45 contests.
Wiseman, who was also noted for his ability on the golf course, would go on to coach junior hockey in Saskatchewan. He would also serve as the Bruins’ Western Canada scout.
After his hockey career, he served as a flying officer, then settled in Red Deer, Alberta, where he worked as a real estate agent and in insurance. Wiseman passed away there in Red Deer on May 4th, 1977. at the age of 64.
Eddie was enrolled in the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame, June 8, 1974.
