John Cann is renowned for the score of legendary home runs he hit at every classification he played. A 6’4″, 230 lb first basemen, John could flat out hit.
Locally, John starred at the minor, high school, junior and senior levels, leading his teams to numerous NB, Maritime and Atlantic championships. He earned a large number of individual awards, the most notable being the Top Hitter Award at The Canadian Junior Baseball Championships in Newcastle in 1991.
In 1990, John joined the Canadian National Baseball Institute, thus becoming one of the quality baseball players in the country and a carded member of Team Canada. In 1992, he earned the Outstanding Hitter Award at the CNBI and, in 1993, he received the prestigious Jimmy Rattlesnake Award. In 1995, he competed at the Qualifying Tournament for the XXVI Olympic Games in Edmonton.
John also played semi-pro baseball in Saskatchewan and was the leading hitter for the European Cup Champions, The Montpelier Barracudas.
He was an accomplished hockey player and starred as a defenceman for MVHS, the Mount Allison Mounties and the Tim Horton’s Leafs.
John Cann was a consummate team player who possessed a quiet determination to excel, making him a worthy recipient for this honour.
