Jack Estey was a man with vision, tenacity and leadership skills. He employed these skills to foresee the need to transform The Miramichi Golf and Country Club from a small 9-hole facility with an elite membership , to the 18-hole gem that is now a valued part of the Miramichi infrastructure.
Jack joined the club in the early fifties and held executive positions in both the MG&CC and the MGC Ltd. , serving as president of each for a year. He was the club’s North Shore Golf Association representative for several years. He was also only one of four members bestowed with the honour of “Lifetime Member” for his contributions.
Jack was instrumental in upgrading the front of the property. In 1978, while serving as Greens Chairman, he led the development of 9 new holes. In 1981, he drove the first ball opening the club to an expanded 18 holes. He was also at the forefront in the construction of the new addition to the clubhouse which opened in 1985. He also supervised the building of 4 new greens and the extension of 2 other holes in 1999.
A successful businessman, Jack’s charity and leadership were most evident throughout the Miramichi community. After his death, Jack had bequeathed a large sum of money to be used solely for the beautification of the golf club.
Lastly, Jack, who enjoyed both the competitive and social sides of golf, made an additional bequest to be used to support an annual mixed friendly golf tournament that bears his name.
