“Jackie “Keating (1908-1984) was an outstanding athlete who excelled as both a baseball and hockey player in the early New Brunswick Senior leagues.

He began his hockey career with Harkins High before graduating to the senior league with the Chatham Ironmen in 1925.  His hockey prowess soon had him on the road to Saint John to play with the Saint John Fusiliers and later with the Saint John Beavers.

He then joined the New Haven Eagles of the Canadian- American Hockey League.  In the 1931-32 season and part of the next, he made it to hockey’s top tier, toiling with the New York Americans of the National Hockey League.  Over the next ten years, he continued his professional career on such teams as the Providence Reds, the Buffalo Bisons, and the Syracuse Stars.

He returned to Saint John in 1941 and joined a number of local teams over the next few years competing for the Maritime Senior Championships and the Allan Cup.  He turned to coaching following his retirement as a player, where he led the Saint John Beavers to a Maritime Senior Championship in 1947.  He went on to coach and inspire many of Saint John’s youth in the Saint John minor hockey and baseball programs, making him a very well respected member of the Saint John sporting community.  He has been inducted into both the NB Sports Hall of Fame, and the Saint John Sports Wall of Fame.
